Wi-Fi 7 is the better long-term choice for high-performance homes, but only when the devices in the house are new enough to use it. For most homes today, a well-designed Wi-Fi 6 network still fixes the things that actually cause callbacks. The number on the box is not the decision. The house is.
Every integrator has had this conversation. A client reads that Wi-Fi 7 is faster, so they want it. The honest answer is that the speed on the box almost never matches what happens in a real home. What decides whether an AV system feels reliable is coverage, how devices move between access points, interference, and how the network handles a full house of gear all connected at once. Wi-Fi 7 helps with some of that. It does nothing for the rest. Here is how to tell the difference before you spec it.
What is the real difference between Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7?
Wi-Fi 6 was built to handle a crowded house. Its whole job is keeping the network responsive when a lot of devices are connected at the same time. Wi-Fi 6E is the same thing, plus access to a newer, cleaner slice of airwaves (the 6 GHz band) that older devices cannot crowd.
Wi-Fi 7 is a bigger step. The most useful thing it adds is the ability for a device to use two connections at the same time and jump to whichever one is cleaner in the moment; this is also known as MLO (Multi-Link Operation), and is only available in very few devices at the time of writing this. For AV, that is the part that matters. It is not about a bigger top speed. It is about a video or control signal staying steady when one channel gets noisy, which is exactly what keeps you from getting called back.
Wi-Fi 7 does have headline speed features too, but they come with a catch. The very fastest speeds only show up when a device is close to the access point with a strong, clean signal. Move to the next room, and those speeds quietly drop back down to Wi-Fi 6 levels. In a real home with walls and distance, the giant numbers on the box rarely hold up. The steadier connection does, and that is the real win.

The most important row is the second-to-last one. Wi-Fi 7 does not make a Wi-Fi 6 phone faster. The benefits only show up when the device on the other end is also a Wi-Fi 7 device, and in most homes today, most of the gear is not there yet.
Does home AV gear actually use Wi-Fi 7?
This is the question that should drive the decision, and it is the one most people skip.
A lot of AV traffic is lighter than the marketing makes it sound. Control commands, streaming from apps, and most audio do not need much speed. What they need is a steady, low-delay connection, which is a different thing. The traffic that does need real speed is high-quality video sent over the network, and the serious version of that should run over wired cable anyway, not Wi-Fi. So here is the realistic picture. Phones, tablets, laptops, and the newest streaming devices are the ones that will actually use Wi-Fi 7. Everything else falls back to whatever it was built for. If the house is full of recent Apple and Samsung gear, Wi-Fi 7 devices are already there. If it is a mix of older stuff, you are paying for a capability that mostly sits unused.
When should you spec Wi-Fi 7, and when is Wi-Fi 6 enough?
Go with Wi-Fi 7 when the home has newer devices that can use it, when there is fast internet or heavy traffic between devices in the house, when the area is packed with neighboring networks fighting for the same airwaves, or when the client keeps their gear for years and wants the network to age well. In those cases, the steadier connection is worth it, and it protects your margin by preventing return trips.
Stick with Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E when the real problem is coverage or dead zones rather than raw speed, when the budget is better spent on more access points and smarter placement, or when the client’s devices are older and will not touch Wi-Fi 7 features for years. A well-placed Wi-Fi 6 network beats a poorly placed Wi-Fi 7 one every single time. The standard is not the design.
What else has to keep up with a Wi-Fi 7 upgrade?
Picking the access point is the easy part. The rest of the setup has to keep up, and this is where a job goes sideways after the fact.
Power is the first surprise. Wi-Fi 7 access points often need more power than the older ones, so the switch or power source feeding them has to be able to deliver it. Give one too little power and it runs in a limited mode, which means you paid for features that never turn on.
Speed to the rest of the network is the second. A Wi-Fi 7 access point can move more than a gigabit of traffic, so a standard gigabit connection back to the switch becomes the bottleneck. Security is the third. Wi-Fi 7 needs the newer WPA3 security to work fully. If a network is still set up with older security, some of the Wi-Fi 7 benefits simply will not kick in, the biggest being the ability to broadcast in 6GHz.
None of this is a reason to avoid Wi-Fi 7. It is a reason to plan the whole network as one system instead of swapping an access point and hoping. That system view is the difference between a network that just works and one that turns into a service call.

Plan for enough power to run the Wi-Fi 7 access points fully, a faster switch so the connection back to the network is not the bottleneck, and WPA3 security, which Wi-Fi 7 needs to work fully.
